Ask Your Father Special Episode

Today’s conversation topic is a special one and a delicate one. I want to give you a warning that some of today’s content is delicate and may be hard to hear for some, as some of it concerns a former pastor from our area that many of you may have known personally, respected, and befriended.

The issue of clergy abuse has been a bigger part of our area’s history than in other parts of the diocese. Both Holy Ghost and Notre Dame parishes have had priests that have served their parishes who were on the diocesan list of clergy with credible accusations of sexual abuse against them.

What is the goal of our conversation today?: Authentic healing of the Church and community from the scourge of sexual abuse.

First, we want victim survivors to receive our support and care for their personal healing.

Second, in order to really grow and mature from the wrongs that have been perpetrated in the past, the rest of us as members of the Church and our parishes must continue to confront and wrestle with the reality of the crimes that have occurred, even at the hands of priests or other members of the Church we may have known or remember fondly.

We recognize that all members of the Church, priests included, are in desperate need of Christ's healing and grace, as we all struggle and fall short of holiness at times. Christ comes to heal us, and never gives up on us.

May the Lord, who is rich in mercy, heal us all of our sins and bring us to everlasting life.
